Research Capacity Development

The NMMU Department of Research Capacity Development invite emerging academics to apply for participation in this initiative, which is aimed at career development of the new generation of academics at NMMU:

Target group:

Academic staff members at associate lecturer, lecturer and senior lecturer levels

Requirements and eligibility criteria:

Successful candidates must: 

  • be South African citizens or permanent residents of South Africa;
  • have at least a Masters’-level qualification, or the equivalent, or currently be enrolled for a Masters’ degree at a recognized institution; or
  • be enrolled for a doctoral qualification at a recognized institution or have completed a qualification at doctoral level during the past 5 years;
  • be an academic staff member (permanent or contract) at the NMMU;
  • have demonstrated their ability/potential for academic work and research excellence;
  • be committed to advancing their academic skills and knowledge in a condensed time frame;
  • be committed to participate in a series of workshops (approximately 2 -3 days per month), some of which will be compulsory;
  • be committed to working in close cooperation with a NMMU mentor, should this be deemed necessary;
  • have the support of their HoD/DoS/Dean, since participation in this programme could possibly impact on workload and teaching duties.

Programme duration:

April 2011 – October 2011

Programme focus:

Monthly workshops (2-3 days per month) in the following areas:

  • Research
  • Teaching
  • Community engagement
  • Leadership

Mentorship in the above areas, if deemed necessary. 

Expected outcomes:

Successful candidates can expect the following at the end of the programme: 

  • accelerated progress in the acquisition and development of academic, research and teaching skills and knowledge;
  • career development

All applications must include:

  • application form, signed by all required parties;
  • detailed CV, with all relevant academic and research outputs achieved;
  • certified copy of last qualification obtained;
  • proof of current registration; and
  • two referee reports or letters of support.
